Your ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 soundtrack

(CNN)The most powerful trigger in “Stranger Things’” nostalgia arsenal remains, as always, the eclectic, still-pervasive pop music landscape of the ’80s. “Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon This one was also a preeminent saliva-swapping song of its day. The group’s music also appeared in films like “The Goonies” — a major “Stranger Things” influence — and “Vision Quest,” a fondly remembered teen romantic comedy from 1985 and early breakout role for Matthew Modine, now remembered for his role as Dr. Brenner. “Material Girl” and “Angel” by Madonna The superb “Vision Quest” soundtrack also served as one of Madonna’s earliest film showcases, and this season two key 1985 tunes, her colossal, culture-defining hit “Material Girl” — used as the spot-on …

‘Elisa & Marcela’ butchers a historic same-sex love story

looks like the kind of movie youre supposed to admire. The erotic dramabased on the true story of Spains first recorded same-sex weddingfeatures stunning black-and-white photography courtesy of director of photography Jennifer Cox. The camera lovingly lingers on a flower being doused with rain, holds carefully on church bells ringing, and bounces calmly on the ebb and flow of the ocean tide. Coxs framing is often wide, emphasizing the space between the films protagonists and reinforcing the challenges they face. The soapy series will bait you into soaking up every minute of its ludicrous self-indulgence — delivering just enough real-world bite to leave you wanting that next episode. Starring Renée Zellweger as evil venture capitalist Anne Montgomery, What/If is essentially a gender-swapped, serialized version of the 1993 film Indecent Proposal.  Lisa …

Netflix’s ‘Maria’ is a trigger-happy B-movie

Mariarevolves around an assassin named, you guessed it Lily. The acting is stilted, which leads to some unintended laughs. The dialogue is as cursory as it can possibly be.Mariaoozes clichs. Its a shame because Maria shouldbe more fun than it is. Stunt coordinator Sonny Sison comes up with a couple of nice set pieces. There is an awesome fight sequence about two-thirds of the way into the film between Maria and a rival assassin Miru (Jennifer Lee) set in a bathroom. Between the choreography and the clarity of the cinematography and direction by Pao Orendain and Pedring Lopez, its a brutal and thrilling fight. Its a down and dirtier bout that may remind viewers of the bathroom-wrecking brawl between Tom …

These memorable movie scenes were totally unscripted

Christopher Abbott, Pico Alexander, and George Clooney in Hulu's 'Catch-22.'Image: Philipe Antonello / Hulu It couldn’t be more fitting that the latest adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 finds its home on Hulu, proud purveyors of dystopia.  The six-episode miniseries has been marketed mostly as a comedy, but as anyone familiar with Heller’s 1961 novel knows, that’s just a way to cheat the system. Make no mistake, friends, this is a war epic, and a searing, caustic commentary from the men inside it.  Catch-22 is the story of John Yossarian (Christopher Abbott), a neurotic World War II bomb plane pilot whose only goal is to survive the war – by getting out of it. Yossarian and his unit have a mandatory …

Someone Great, which feels like a rom-com but technically isn’t, has a crackling cast and snappy dialogue, but it lacks the x-factor of the sparkling original films among which it tries to stand. Someone Great tells the story of Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) on the day after she breaks up with Nate (Lakeith Stanfield), her boyfriend of nine years.
