In ‘Straight Up,’ A Gay Man’s Search For Love Becomes An Identity Crisis

Straight Up,” his debut feature film, came from a sobering epiphany ― even though the final product is very much an “arthouse screwball” rom-com. HuffPost got a sneak peek at “Straight Up,” which is being shown at Frameline Film Festival last month, via the exclusive clip above. The scene introduces Todd (played by Sweeney), a neurotic gay man whose attempts at relationships with men leave him feeling unfulfilled. Courtesy of James Sweeney “Straight Up” stars James Sweeney (left) and Katie Findlay.  Describing his cinematic voice as “dialogue-driven, balanced and whimsical ― but not for lack of heart,” Sweeney cites Joss Whedon and Bryan Fuller as artistic influences. He also sees “Straight Up” as a unique film in that its LGBTQ themes are “incidental.” And, …

Jim Goad Updated July 24, 2019 Warning: this article is graphic. Jim Goad Updated July 24, 2019 1. Thomas Barker: Shoved A Red-Hot Poker Down His Throat No one knew who the haggard-looking man was. As a small group sat before a fireplace in a Leeds, England, hotel lobby two days before Christmas, 1856, it didn’t seem to matter—he was welcome to share in the season’s joy. Appearing troubled, he had wandered in from the cold night, requested a pipe, and sat peevishly before the fire. It didn’t have to happen. He could have thrown another log on the fire, sipped some tea, and quietly passed wind. He could have warmed his toes, cracked his knuckles, and inquired about rugby …

Amanda Woodard, 56, is a journalist and Clive Hopkins, 60, is a screenwriter and teacher. They have been together for 23 years and live in Sydney Amanda and Clive had been hearing about each other for about 10 years before they met. We had mutual friends and I would always hear about Clive doing this or that, Clive on the picket line or Clive cheating on some girl, she says, and Clive laughs. Clive had a reputation for not sticking with girlfriends very long and just playing the field, so I wasnt keen to meet him at all. He sounded really dodgy. I would hear wonderful things about you, he says. That youd had lives in London and Barcelona, that …

Our Ancestors Interbred With At Least Four Archaic Human Populations

It’s not long since we learned most of us carry DNA from Neanderthals and Denisovans, but that was only the beginning. A new study indicates the genetic legacy of at least four archaic human populations survives today from five or six rounds of interactions. Prejudice against sex between races looks pretty laughable when you consider our ancestors didn’t seem to care too much about the species they were having sex with. To identify Neanderthal and Denisovan influences in modern genomes, scientists use DNA from fossil members of each. It’s much harder to identify the presence of gene variations from populations whose DNA we don’t have, but some teams have developed methods allowing us to do this. Dr João Teixeira of the University of Adelaide …
